XC Skiing on the Meyer Farm

by Gerald Janauer on January 8, 2009

I haven’t had much time to spend outside in the last few weeks.  Cross country skiing is one of my all time favorite pastimes, possibly second only to hiking, bicycling, and kayaking down the Delaware (good thing I don’t have to choose a favorite, we can participate in all of theses activities within a few miles from our house!).  There have been several days with good snow cover already, this season.  None of these times, however, did I have the opportunity to spend a little time out of doors enjoying the fresh air and the white stuff.

Sunday, finally, after taking care of the chickens and cleaning up the snow in the driveway, I said “That’s it! I’m going out skiing!”  I did ask my wife to go, but she was worried that the conditions would be difficult, so she decided to exercise on the treadmill instead.  I gathered my gear (a miracle I was able to find it since last season), and set out to drive up the hill.  I had borrowed a saw from Brad (my friend, the owner of the Meyer Farm) to saw a large ham for another friend (that’s a story for another time - perhaps for my wife’s blog), and needed to return it.  As I drove up the road I saw Brad working with his skidder (he does logging to supplement his farming income).  I asked Brad if it was o.k. for me to go up to the top of this hill and ski a bit, and he reminded me that I have a standing invitation to do so.  I handed him his saw and off I went.

It was a really warm day.  Brad had asked me if I was dressed warm enough (all I had on was a windbloc fleece).  I had told him, no problem, I’d be sweating soon enough.  I had brought a hat and gloves.

I parked my car by the gate at the edge of Brad’s property, put on my skis, grabbed my poles, and off I went.  The first thing I noticed was that the snow surface was wonderful.  There was nice soft fluffy snow on a harder base.  The soft snow adhered slightly to the base, which made the snow buttery smooth.  It felt great under my skis.  It had been such a long time since I had last been on a pair of boards!

I made my way up the hill, finding that I had a surprising amount of grip with my wax less skis.  When I arrived at the top, I was again amazed at how good the glide was on this fresh surface on the older base.

I couldn’t quite remember which logging road I had taken the last time I had been on Brad’s property (last year), so I took my best guess.  It was not such a good guess.  I encountered many down trees and some areas of thin snow.  I needed to use quite a bit of upper body strength to get myself over some of these stumps and logs.  In this way, I skidded, slid, hopped and climbed up and down several downhills and a few uphills.  I did not find the logging road I was looking for, and my shoulders were getting tired.  As anticipated I had worked up a sweat.  I didn’t mind because the woods were beautiful!

I did finally find the loop I had been looking for.  The conditions were initially not quite as good as I had expected.  There was a little less snow on one side of the hill (southern exposure), and there were some bare rocks, twigs, and some briers that interfered with a nice smooth glide.  But it was still easier going than on the other tracks I had made so far.   As I looped around the northern side of the hill there was a little more snow in the woods, and the skiing was GREAT!  Off I went, around the bend and down.  Wheee!!!  Now we were talking!

On my way back to the car, this is what my return track looked like:

All in all, I spent a little over an hour out.  It was a real treat to get a chance to be outdoors on a beautiful, sunny day, and get some exercise right on the Meyer Mountain Farm!

Hi Henie,
Thanks for coming over to take a look. I was lucky to get out last week. It’s snowing again, and tomorrow is supposed to be a nice day, maybe I’ll get lucky and get out again!

Rita,
Thanks! Those were just some quick shots to show the beauty of the woods. I love being in the woods with snow!
