Into the Woods

by Gerald Janauer on January 21, 2009

I had considered taking my photo class to Stonearch Bridge Park this week, but that was not in the cards.  We had gotten quite a bit of snow over the weekend, and I was not confident that my students would be dressed weather appropriate.  S0, I took the safe and easy way out - another walk into the woods on school property.

One of the things I am trying to teach my students is that being creative about photography means looking at the world from different angles and perspectives.  This also means eing creative about seeing, and is something that I have been trying to train myself to do (with only partial success) for a while now.

Sometimes if we aren’t observant, we fail to see things in the world around us.  On my walk with the students I was intrigued by the delicacy of a golden piece of grass that was peering through the snow, still trying to deliver its see payload to the earth.

Here we see James staging a shot.  He is trying to capture snow falling off a branch.  It seems that he’s gotten some on himself in the process!

After spending about an hour out of doors, the students and I went inside to download and evaluate our images.  Are our images pleasing?  That is one of the questions we ask ourselves as we review our work for the day.  In either case, we all spent some time outside in the snow, and that alone can make the class worthwile.

Insightful post Gerald about the process of discovery. So often it’s simply allowing for the time needed to let the beauty that surrounds us to manifest to our attention.

I love finding the “small” things - little windows of beauty in the outdoors that you can only see through a camera lens. I am reminded of St. Therese, the little flower, and how she taught about doing little things with great love. In the rush and bustle of “modern” life I think we oftentimes miss the pictures of grass in the snow. What a wonderful gift you are giving your students, Gerald. To see the world through a smaller lens.

As kids, we love to look for details in our environment. It seems to be true even when we have grown.

It is good to do these activities to remind ourselves that we were once kids and will always have the child in us to help us grow.
