In the Camera Bag

by Gerald Janauer on December 29, 2008

As always, the question is: What do I load in my camera bag when I go out? On Tuesday’s student trip to a university gym and later basketball game I am in a quandary.

We will be indoors all afternoon and evening. Do I forgo the long zooms for fast primes, or do I carry both? Do I grab the Nikon D300 with or without the grip? Will I need the additional speed of the grip (the grip allows shooting at up to 8 frames per second, versus the standard 6 fps)?

The Nikon D300 performs very well at ISOs up to and including ISO 800+. Still, the faster lenses, if they allow sufficient flexibility, will give better results.

Stand by for Tuesday’s trip log and images from that outing.

I recommend carrying both. That way, if the perfect shot is there, you’ll have the right camera. Otherwise, you’ll end up finding the perfect shot for the camera you left at home!

I look forward to seeing how you make use of your gear for different situations.

I’m so envious! What great equipment you have! I have a Nikon D90, and I love it, but like you, my father-in-law has a D-300, and he let me play with it over Christmas. It’s very nice!

Hi Beth,
Thanks very much for looking at my blog. I hope you come back to see new additions as I can get them posted.

In terms of photo quality the Nikon D90 is not at all behind the D300. Both cameras have their advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes I think it would be nice to have a D90 for its lighter weight, but have found that hard to justify since we still have an older D70 that is about same size and weight as your D90.

Enjoy making your cards!

Gerald
